Wimbachklamm & Ramsau · Bavaria, Germany · October 2025
Waterfalls on every wall, cows and sheep on every hill, and two schnitzels in a 500-year-old inn.
One day in Ramsau wasn't enough, so on October 16, 2025, Philipp and I stayed to explore more. We walked through the Wimbachklamm, a short but wild gorge just outside the village, wandered the meadows above the valley in the afternoon sun, and finished the day with schnitzel and a beer at the Gasthof Oberwirt, right next to the famous church.
Our day, step by step
- Hike Through the Wimbachklamm gorge
- Walk Meadows, farms and mountain views around Ramsau
- Meet Brown sheep and curious cows
- Eat Schnitzel at the Gasthof Oberwirt
The Wimbachklamm
The Wimbachklamm sits at the entrance to the Wimbach valley, between the Watzmann and the Hochkalter. It's only about 200 meters long, but every step is worth it. A wooden boardwalk clings to the rock walls while the Wimbach rushes below you in a milky turquoise color, and water pours down the mossy cliffs from all sides, like a hundred little waterfalls at once. Fallen tree trunks lie wedged across the stream, and the air in the gorge feels cool and damp.

Tip: the gorge path is wet and partly stairs, so wear shoes with good grip. It's open in the warmer months only, roughly May through October.
Wandering the meadows of Ramsau
After the gorge we walked the quiet lanes and farm roads around Ramsau. The clouds kept moving over the mountains, and every few minutes the sun broke through and lit up the valley. Wooden signposts point the way to guesthouses, a warning sign promises an 18% grade with cows crossing, and the farmhouses with their wooden balconies sit on the hills surrounded by gold and orange trees.

Sheep and cows
We weren't the only ones out enjoying the afternoon. A flock of brown sheep was grazing under a huge old tree, and on the next hill a group of brown-and-white cows stopped to stare at us as we walked by.

Schnitzel at the Gasthof Oberwirt
By evening we were hungry, and the Gasthof Oberwirt was the obvious choice. The big yellow inn with its painted saints and lit-up sign stands right by the St. Sebastian church, and it has been in the same family for more than 500 years. Inside, the Stube has heavy dark ceiling beams, wooden chairs with heart-shaped cutouts, old beer steins on the cabinet and a white rose on every table.

We ordered two classics: a Schnitzel Wiener Art, breaded and golden with a lemon wedge and lingonberry sauce, and a Rahmschnitzel, smothered in a creamy sauce with bits of ham. Both came with a big pile of fries. To drink: a cold beer from the Hofbräuhaus Berchtesgaden, the local brewery.
